At the same time, the demand-side platform (DSP) will place bids for the advertiser, of which are dependent on a few factors, such as budget and strategy. The highest bid will then be selected as the winner and the ad displayed on the page once it is done loading.

As long as the ad exchange permits it, anyone can buy from the platform. You can look at it as a collection of ad impressions where publishers drop adverts hoping someone will buy them. The purchases happen in real-time, with buyers using information like the user’s past behaviour, device type, time of day, relative position of the advert, and more.

At the onset, one may think that an ad exchange and ad network are one and the same. However, they are not – essentially, ad networks are not programmatic.

An ad network is a platform that serves as a broker between publishers and advertisers. Traditionally, it collects unsold ad inventory from publishers and offers them to advertisers at a much lower price than the direct sales proposed by the publishers. However, many ad networks have since taken a more strategic approach, in which they pick and choose an inventory that they wish to pre-buy and sell to advertisers at premium prices. This naturally translates to a more expensive arrangement, but the appeal of an ad network lies in its ability to guarantee premium placements for ads.

CPM stands for cost per mille, or cost per thousand, and refers to the price paid by an advertiser for 1,000 impressions (placements of an ad) on a web page. This is the most common way to purchase online ad space programmatically. For example, if a publisher charges a CPM of $1.00, that means an advertiser pays $1.00 for every 1,000 ad impressions.

The cost of programmatic marketing varies considerably based on your target audience, industry competition, campaign goals and a range of other variables. Larger campaigns can have a high initial cost due to their complexity, but a well-executed strategy can result in a strong return on investment for your business and far greater efficiency than traditional advertising channels and strategies.

Therefore, determining whether programmatic advertising is expensive is relative to your long-term return on investment.
